01 · why is my business not showing up on google
Why a business is missing from Maps.
Almost always one of six: the profile is unverified, it is suspended, the category is wrong, the address or service area does not match where you are searching from, a duplicate listing is splitting your signals, or you are outside the radius Google drew for that search.
The last one surprises owners most. Maps results change with the searcher's location, sometimes street by street. Work down the list in order, because the first three are yes or no answers you can settle today.
02 · google maps listing not showing
Six causes of a missing Maps listing.
The profile is not verified
An unverified profile can exist and still not appear. Open it signed in as the owner and check the verification state. If it is pending, the rest of this list is premature.
The profile is suspended
Suspensions follow an edit to the name, address or category, and Google does not make it obvious. The profile disappears from Maps while looking normal in your dashboard. Check for a notice, then check in an incognito window.
The primary category is wrong
Category is the strongest relevance signal in Maps. The primary one decides which searches you are eligible for, so a practice filed under a general category will not surface for the service it sells.
The address or service area does not match the search
With a real office, the address is the anchor and results fall away with distance. If you serve clients at their location, Google reads the service area, and an over wide one is a weaker signal instead of a stronger one.
There is a duplicate listing
Two listings split your reviews and your signals, and Google may show the wrong one or neither. Duplicates come from an old office, a former owner, or an aggregator.
You are outside the radius for that query
Not a defect. Google draws a tight area for competitive searches, and a business ten minutes away may not be in it. That is prominence, not settings, and it takes months rather than an afternoon.

04 · how google decides what to show in maps
What decides Google Maps rankings.
Google states its ranking factors for local results plainly: relevance, distance and prominence.
Relevance
How well the profile matches the search: category, services, description, and the words on the page it points at. The fastest of the three to improve.
Distance
How far you are from the searcher, or from the place they named. You cannot move your office, but you decide which neighborhoods you build real pages for.
Prominence
How well known the business is: reviews, mentions across the web, the strength of your site. The slow one, and it decides competitive searches.
