Set It UpOnce, Properly.

Every field that carries weight, in the order to do it, and the specific edits that get a profile suspended. Most profiles I audit are missing four of these.

01 · how do i set up a google business profile

How to set up a Google profile.

Claim it, verify it, get the primary category exactly right, then fill every field before you post anything. Editing core fields after the profile is live is what triggers suspensions.

This is the highest return hour available to a local business, and it is free. Most buyers read the profile before they reach your website, so it is doing more of your selling than your homepage is.

02 · google business profile checklist

Google Business Profile fields that matter.

01

Business name, exactly as it is on your sign

Your real name and nothing else. Adding a service or a city is a guidelines violation, the most commonly reported reason for a suspension, and competitors report it.

02

Primary category

The strongest relevance signal you control. One primary category decides which searches you are eligible for. Pick the most specific one that describes what you sell, then add secondary categories.

03

Address, or service area, not both loosely

If clients come to you, the address is the anchor. If you go to them, set a service area and keep it honest. An over wide service area weakens the signal rather than extending your reach.

04

Phone number, the one that is answered

One primary number, matching the number on your website. If it goes to voicemail during business hours, fix that before you optimize anything else.

05

Website link, pointed at the right page

Point it at the page that matches what the profile is about. For a single service business that is the homepage. For a practice with several services, the relevant service page usually outperforms it.

06

Hours, including the holidays

Set them, and set the special hours for holidays. Google surfaces closures prominently, and being shown as open when you are closed produces exactly one review you do not want.

07

Services and products, itemized

List each service separately with a real description rather than one lump. Free surface area that matches the words people search.

08

Description

What you do, who for, where. No keyword stuffing. It carries less ranking weight than owners assume and more reading weight than they expect.

09

Photos, real ones

The outside so people can find the door, the inside so they know what to expect, and the team. Stock photography reads as stock photography, and it costs you more trust here than anywhere else.

10

Attributes

Parking, accessibility, appointment required, languages spoken. These become filters people search with, so an unset attribute is an exclusion you did not choose.

11

Messaging and the booking link

Turn messaging on only if somebody will answer it. A slow reply on the profile is worse than no messaging at all.

12

Reviews, and a plan for asking

Ask every satisfied client and reply to every review, including the good ones. Never buy reviews and never offer anything in exchange for one.

03 · google business profile suspension

Four edits that get a profile suspended.

If a suspension happens, stop editing, write down what changed just before it, and appeal with evidence that the business operates where you say it does. Editing during an appeal turns a short suspension into a long one.

Adding a service or a city into the business name field.
Changing the address to a location that is not staffed during business hours, including a mailbox or a coworking desk.
Switching the primary category to something the business does not obviously do.
Several core field edits in quick succession, which reads as a hijack attempt whatever you intended.

04 · google business profile maintenance

Monthly Google Business Profile upkeep.

Reply to every new review, briefly, including the five star ones.
Add photos, so the profile is not frozen at the day you set it up.
Check the questions and answers section, because anybody can answer a question about your business and often does so wrongly.
Check for duplicate listings, which appear on their own from aggregators and old addresses.
Confirm the hours ahead of any holiday.

05 · google business profile questions

Google Business Profile questions.

How much does Google Business Profile optimization cost?
The profile itself is free from Google. Having somebody run it sits inside the SEO line at $1,000 a month here, alongside the site work, the pages, the reviews and AI search. Two services together are $1,799 and three are $2,499. No setup fee.
Can I have a profile without a physical address?
Yes, as a service area business. You hide the address and set the areas you serve. What you cannot do is use a mailbox or an unstaffed office as an address.
How many categories should I add?
One primary, chosen carefully, then only the secondary categories you genuinely serve. Adding categories you do not serve dilutes relevance rather than widening it.
How long until the profile shows up in results?
A verified profile usually surfaces on a name search quickly and takes much longer to appear for competitive service searches. Those are two different events.
Do posts on the profile help ranking?
They are better understood as a shop window than a ranking lever. They keep the profile current and they get read, which is worth doing for its own sake.
What if somebody else claimed my listing?
Request ownership through Google's own process and be ready to prove the business is yours. Old agencies and former staff are the usual explanation.

I will audit your Google profile.

Send me the profile and I will tell you which fields are working against you, with the check behind each one. Free, and you never have to get on a call.
