The owners I talk to in The Valley have almost all paid for something before. Very few describe being robbed. They describe paying an invoice every month against a report they had no way to verify, and not being able to trace one new client back to one thing that was done. That is a failure of visibility, not of effort.
So the buying test is not who sounds smartest about AI. It is who will hand you a dated record of what shipped, at a URL you can open without asking them first.

Ask these in the first call. The answers are more revealing than any case study.
Who does the work after I sign?
You want a name, and it should be the name in front of you. The common pattern in this category is a senior person selling and a junior person delivering. Nobody is being dishonest. That is how agencies are staffed, and it is why the work drifts.
What will exist thirty days from now?
A good answer names artifacts: this system live, these pages rewritten, this report published at this address. A weak answer names phases, workshops and alignment.
Where do I read what you did?
The answer should be a link, not a promise of a monthly deck. If the record lives inside their tool and disappears when you leave, it was never yours.
What do I own if I stop?
Domain, site, hosting, analytics, ad accounts, Google Business Profile, every page and asset. If the answer is anything less, you are renting your own business.
What will you not do?
Anyone who does everything at your size is describing a sales page, not a practice. I would rather hear a short list and a referral than a yes to all of it.

By the end of month one you should be able to point at something that exists now and did not before, and open the record that says when it shipped. If that is not true after thirty days, it will not become true in month six.
