01 · what does claude code do

What Claude Code does.

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding tool. It runs on your own machine, reads the files in a project, and carries out instructions written in ordinary sentences. Build this page. Find why this form is not sending. Pull last quarter out of these spreadsheets and give me one summary.

The important part for an owner is what comes out of it. Not advice, and not a description of what should be done. Working files that live on your computer or your server and belong to you.

It is also not the same thing as pasting a question into a browser. The difference is access and follow through. It can open your project, change twelve files, run the thing to see whether it worked, and fix what it broke.

02 · what claude code is not

What Claude Code is not.

Not a website builder. There are no templates and nothing to drag. It writes the site

Not a replacement for judgment. It will do the wrong thing very competently if the wrong thing is what you asked for

Not a one click tool. It is a senior instrument with a real learning curve, and the first week is genuinely awkward

Not hands off. Anything it produces gets read by a person before it reaches a client

03 · what can a non developer build with claude code

What a non developer can build.

Four things I see it earn its keep on inside a professional practice, in the order most owners find useful.

The report nobody has time to make

Several exports, one summary, run again next month by repeating one instruction. This is usually the first thing that pays for itself.

A data cleanup

The client list with three spellings of every name, deduplicated and checked, in one pass instead of a temp and a fortnight.

A small internal tool

The intake form, the tracker, the calculator your team currently keeps in a spreadsheet with six tabs and one person who understands it.

The website itself

Real pages, fast, in your own hosting account, without a platform between you and the file. This site is built that way.

04 · how much does claude code cost

What Claude Code costs.

It runs on an Anthropic subscription seat, with usage based access for heavier work. Anthropic publishes both on its own pricing page and the numbers move often, so read it at the source before you budget for it.

The cost that actually decides this is not the seat. It is the learning curve, and that is paid in attention rather than money. An owner already comfortable in a terminal will be productive quickly. An owner who is not should give it to somebody in the building who is, or hire the outcome.

05 · claude code limitations

Where Claude Code breaks.

Five places, and knowing them is most of using it well.

It will assert something wrong with total confidence. Everything gets verified, and anything client facing gets read by a person

It does not know your business unless you tell it. Vague instructions produce plausible work aimed at nobody

It can break what already worked. Nothing runs without a checkpoint to roll back to

Long jobs drift. Work in small pieces with a check at the end of each one

It has no stake in the outcome. Somebody has to own the result, and that is the whole job description of the person holding it

07 · claude code questions

Claude Code questions.

Is Claude Code only for programmers?

It is aimed at them and it is usable without being one, if you are comfortable following technical instructions carefully. The realistic split is that a non-developer gets reports, cleanups and small internal tools out of it, and anything client facing wants a second set of eyes.

Is it better than ChatGPT for this?

It is a different kind of thing. A chat window answers. Claude Code opens your project, changes files, runs the result and fixes what it broke. For building something that has to work, that difference is the whole point.

Can it build my website?

Yes, and it built this one. What it does not do is decide what the site should say, which pages should exist, or what a stranger needs to see in the first five seconds. That part is the work.

Is my data safe?

It runs locally and touches the files and systems you point it at, so the exposure is a permissions question, not a mystery. Give it the least access it needs, keep credentials in a vault, and require approval on anything that sends or deletes.

Do you use it on client work?

Yes, and every deliverable it touches is reviewed by me before anybody sees it. AI is the engine here. The judgment and the name on the work are mine.
