article · CLAUDE CODE VS TRADITIONAL DEVELOPMENT

What Actually Changes.

If you are paying for software or a website build, the useful question is not which is better. It is which costs move and which risks move.

drop: comparing ai assisted building against traditional develop…

01 · is ai development faster

Whether AI development is faster.

The first working version arrives far sooner. Everything after that depends on whether anyone senior is reading the output.

This is the part that surprises owners. The bottleneck was never typing the code, it was the wait between asking for something and seeing it. When that wait collapses, the work moves to deciding what is right and checking what was produced. If nobody is doing that, speed turns into a pile of things that mostly work.

03 · what ai building gets wrong

How AI building goes wrong.

01

Confident wrong answers

A model will produce something that looks finished and is subtly incorrect. In a website that means a form that submits nowhere or a page nobody can find. Testing catches this, reading does not.

02

Volume without a decision

It is trivial to generate forty pages. Knowing which four should exist is the work. Volume with no priority behind it is how sites end up with hundreds of pages and no traffic.

03

No memory of why

Traditional teams carry context in their heads. An AI assisted practice has to write the reasons down or lose them. Written decision records are the substitute for institutional memory.

04

Security and access sprawl

Speed makes it easy to wire tools together with keys that outlive the project. The discipline is one place for credentials and a short access list, decided before the build starts.

04 · when to hire a traditional developer

When to hire a traditional developer.

When the thing you are building can hurt someone or bankrupt you if it is quietly wrong. Payments, medical records, anything under a regulator. There the review cost dominates and you want a named engineer who has done it before, using AI or not.

For a marketing site, a booking flow, an internal tool or the automations that move work between your systems, AI assisted building is the better trade. The mistakes are visible, reversible and cheap.

The version I would avoid is the middle: a vendor using AI to produce volume at traditional prices with no record of what was checked.

05 · how to buy either one safely

What to insist on in a build.

You own the repository, the hosting and the domain from day one, not at the end.
A written record of what shipped and when, that you can read without asking.
Something working in the first two weeks, however small.
A test that proves the important paths still work after a change.
A named person who is accountable for the output, whatever wrote the first draft.

06 · questions about ai development

AI development questions.

Will AI built software be harder to maintain?
Only if nobody wrote down why it is shaped the way it is. The code itself is usually more conventional than hand written code, because models produce the common pattern. The gap is context, and it is closed with written records.
Does it cost less to build a website this way?
It is a fraction of the cost of a traditional custom build at the same quality, and the reason is the review and iteration loop rather than the typing. What you should not accept is AI speed at traditional prices.
Can I switch vendors afterwards?
If you own the repository, the hosting and the accounts, yes, and that should be true regardless of how it was built. Ask the question before you sign, not after.
Do I need to understand any of this?
No. You need to insist on three things: something working early, a record you can read, and ownership of every asset. Those three cover most of what goes wrong.
What about my existing site?
Most of the time the answer is not a rebuild. It is a crawl, a ranked list of what is broken, and fixes in priority order. The free audit produces that list.

What I will find on your site.

Before you pay anyone to build, get the list of what is already broken on what you have.
