How MapsRanking Works.

I do this work for businesses in The Valley. The profile itself is free, which means anything you pay for is the work on it, and you should be able to see that work.

drop: google maps seo and how the local map results are ranked

01 · is there seo for google maps

Whether Google Maps has its own SEO.

Yes, and it is a separate ranking from the blue links below it. That is the most useful thing to understand here, and almost nothing written about local search says it plainly.

When someone searches for a service near them, Google shows a small map with three businesses on it, then the ordinary results underneath. Two different rankings, two different sets of rules. You can hold the top of the map and be nowhere in the results, or rank first in the results and never appear on the map.

The map ranking is decided mostly by your Google Business Profile, the free listing with your hours, photos and reviews on it. The results ranking is decided mostly by your website. Any proposal that treats them as a single job is either careless or deliberately vague.

02 · how google maps ranking works

How Google Maps ranking works.

Google publishes what decides this, in its own words, and there are three factors. Everything a firm sells you is an attempt to move one of them.

01

Relevance

How closely your profile matches what was searched. Your primary category is the heaviest single field on the whole profile, and the wrong one holds you out of results you should win. Your services, description and photos feed this too.

02

Distance

How far you are from the person searching, or from the area they named. This is the factor nobody can sell you, and it is why your ranking is different across town. Checking your position from one location tells you almost nothing, which is why this work is measured on a grid of points across your service area.

03

Prominence

How well known you are, in the ways Google can measure: reviews and how recently they arrived, mentions of your business on other sites, and the strength of your website. This is the slow one and the one that compounds.

03 · what changes your maps ranking

What changes your Maps ranking.

Two profiles with the same address and the same category rank differently, and these are the reasons why. The last two are the ones that quietly undo work you already paid for.

Some fields on a Google Business Profile are safe for an owner to edit and some carry real risk, and nobody tells you which. Photos, posts, services, hours, your description and replying to reviews are all safe and all worth doing. The name, the address and the primary category are the careful ones: editing them can put the listing into review, and adding words to your name that are not on your signage can get it suspended.

The primary category. The heaviest field on the profile, and frequently set once at signup and never revisited.
Reviews, and specifically how recently they arrived. A profile with forty reviews and none this year is treated differently from one with twenty and four last month.
Whether your name, address and phone match everywhere else online. Old listings with an old suite number or a disconnected number are a live drag.
Whether the website behind the profile is fast, works on a phone, and has a real page for the service being searched.
Google editing your profile without asking. Google merges in information from other sources, so hours, categories and even your phone number can change on their own.
Competitors, including ones behaving badly. Listings with keywords stuffed into the business name or an address that is a mailbox outrank real businesses more often than they should, and reporting them is part of this work.

04 · how to improve google maps ranking faster

How to improve Maps ranking faster.

Four moves, in the order that pays off soonest. Do the first one today, it is free and it takes an evening.

Fill the profile completely and honestly. Every category that genuinely applies, every service with a real description, real photos of your place taken recently, correct hours including holidays, and the booking link pointed at the right page. A profile at half fill is the most common finding in this work and the fastest to fix.

Ask for reviews continuously rather than in a burst. Recency counts, so a steady trickle beats a campaign, and replying to every one of them is a signal in itself.

Clean up the old listings. Every place your business appears with an old address, an old number or a misspelled name is working against you. This is dull, cheap work that most firms charge for and few finish.

Give the profile a real page to point at. If the profile says you do a service and your website has no page for it, the two do not reinforce each other.

One thing to expect. Google rejects edits routinely, sometimes with no explanation, and a change can revert days later. That is normal instead of a sign something went wrong, and it is a reason to keep a dated record of every change.

05 · common questions about google maps seo

Google Maps SEO questions.

Is there SEO for Google Maps?
Yes. It is a separate ranking from the ordinary search results, decided mainly by your Google Business Profile instead of your website, and Google names the three factors itself: relevance, distance and prominence. You can win the map and lose the results, or the reverse.
Is SEO being phased out?
No, but the surface is changing. People increasingly read an AI written answer before they click anything, so the work now includes making sure your pages can be read and cited by those systems. Local map results have not changed and still decide most of the business in a service area.
How much does Google Maps SEO cost?
Firms that sell profile management alone typically charge between a few hundred and several hundred a month, and the profile itself is free, so you are paying for the work rather than the listing. With me it is not sold separately. It sits inside the SEO line at $1,000 a month, with the technical work, the pages, the reviews and AI search in the same number.
Why do I rank at my office and not across town?
Because distance is one of the three factors. Your position changes with where the searcher is standing, so checking it from your own desk is misleading. Real measurement uses a grid of points across the area you serve.
Can I do this myself?
The profile fill, the photos, the posts and the review replies, yes, and you should. The parts that take experience are the category strategy, cleaning up old listings across dozens of sites, and reading a grid to work out where you are actually losing.
How long until the map moves?
Profile fixes can show within weeks. Prominence, which is reviews and mentions accumulating, takes months, and anyone giving you a date is quoting something they do not control.
